KOTA KINABALU, July 8 (Bernama) -- Several Japanese companies have expressed interest to invest in the tourism sector, along with a high technology solar farm development, in Sabah.

Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal said there were proposals for ecotourism investments with hotel facilities on islands near Kota Kinabalu, including Sulug Island.

"These companies are keen on real estate development in the tourism sector. These investments will not only provide infrastructure such as resorts and hotels but will also involve electricity supply using solar technology,” he told reporters after receiving a courtesy call from the delegation of Japanese investors at his office at the Sabah Administrative Centre today.

The delegation was led by Wanoyu Global Co Ltd chief executive officer Nikko Doh.

Mohd Shafie said the Sabah government would first review proposals for the resort development on Sulug Island as the island was among the five protected marine parks under Sabah Parks.

"This is an opportunity for Sabah as it can attract more tourists from Japan. However, we have to look at the best approach on bringing the investment to the island as it is a protected marine park," he said.

Mohd Shafie said the companies had also requested the Sabah government to provide 10 hectares of land for the development of the solar farm.

They are also keen to invest in organic farming such as producing poultry eggs, he said.

Meanwhile, Doh, who acted as spokesman for all the investors, said the delegation hoped to get the full cooperation and support from the Sabah state government on their plans to bring in high technology from Japan.
